How to read your local water report
A shower filter can only help with what is actually in your water. Before you choose one, spend ten minutes with your water report - it tells you which problems a filter can realistically address and which it cannot.
Where the report comes from
If you are on municipal water in the US, your utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), also called a water-quality report. It is usually on the utility website or arrives once a year. On private well water there is no CCR - you get the same information by sending a sample to a certified lab.
The one line that matters most for a shower filter: chlorine vs chloramine
Utilities disinfect with either free chlorine or chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia). This distinction matters because the two behave differently and not every filter media is aimed at both. Look in the report for the disinfectant listed under the distribution system. If it says chloramine, note that - it is harder to reduce than free chlorine, and you will want a model whose stated media targets it.
What this means at home
Find your disinfectant first. A filter picked for free chlorine is not automatically the right pick for a chloramine supply.
Hardness is a separate question
Reports often list hardness (as mg/L or grains per gallon) and dissolved minerals. It is worth knowing your number, but be clear about the limit: a standard shower filter is not a water softener and does not remove dissolved hardness minerals. If hardness is your main concern, the report is telling you the honest answer is a different category of product, not a shower filter.
Reading the numbers without over-reading them
- Units. Most contaminants are shown in ppm (mg/L) or ppb (ug/L). Note which, so you compare like with like.
- Detected vs limit. A value below the regulatory limit is not the same as zero. The report shows what was detected and the allowed maximum side by side.
- Ranges and dates. Numbers are sampled over a period. One reading is a snapshot, not a permanent value - conditions change through the year.
- Non-detect. "ND" means it was below the lab's detection threshold, not proof of total absence.
Match the report to the decision
Once you know your disinfectant and your main concern, the choice narrows quickly. A shower filter is a reasonable step when the report points to chlorine or chloramine and you want to reduce that at the shower head. It is the wrong tool when the report points to dissolved minerals, hardness, or a contaminant that needs whole-house or point-of-use treatment.
