How to Replace Your AquaBliss Cartridge

Takes 2-3 minutes. No plumber. Works for SF100, SF220, and SF500.

Replacing an AquaBliss cartridge is genuinely simple – no tools required in most cases. Here is the full process, plus what to do if the housing is stuck and how to know which cartridge to buy.

First: Make Sure You Have the Right Cartridge

SF100 filter→ SFC100 cartridge (ASIN: B075L81JP5)
SF220 filter→ SFC220 cartridge (1-pack: B072YXV467 / 3-pack: B09RWN42MR)
SF500 filter→ SFC220 cartridge (same as SF220)

SFC100 and SFC220 are not interchangeable. Check the model number printed on your filter housing.

Step-by-Step Replacement

1

Turn off the water (or wait after a shower)

You do not need to turn off the main water supply – just the shower valve. Alternatively, replace the cartridge immediately after a shower while there is no water pressure in the line. Either approach prevents dripping.

2

Unscrew the filter housing (counter-clockwise)

Hold the top of the filter (near the shower arm connection) steady and turn the lower housing section counter-clockwise. It should unscrew by hand. If it is stuck from mineral buildup or over-tightening, use a rubber strap wrench for grip – not metal pliers, which can crack the housing.

3

Remove and discard the old cartridge

Pull the cartridge straight out. It will likely be gray or brown from filtered sediment – this is normal and shows the filter was working. Discard it in regular household trash (the media is non-hazardous).

4

Rinse the housing

Rinse the inside of the lower housing with tap water to clear out any loose sediment or carbon dust before inserting the new cartridge.

5

Insert the new cartridge

Insert the new cartridge with the directional label or arrow facing up, toward the shower arm. Press until it seats fully in the housing. There is no locking mechanism – it just needs to sit flat.

6

Reassemble – hand-tight only

Screw the housing back on clockwise. Hand-tight is enough – over-tightening makes the next cartridge change harder and can stress the threads. You should feel it stop with moderate resistance.

7

Flush for 2-3 minutes before your first shower

Turn the water on and let it run for 2-3 minutes. New activated carbon cartridges release fine carbon dust for the first few minutes – the water may look gray or cloudy. This is harmless but you should flush it before showering. After the flush, the water will be clear.

Troubleshooting

Housing won't unscrew

Mineral scale from hard water can bond the housing threads after 6+ months. Try a rubber strap wrench, or soak a cloth in white vinegar and wrap it around the housing joint for 10-15 minutes to dissolve the scale before trying again.

Water is cloudy after replacement

Normal for a new cartridge. The gray/black discoloration is fine activated carbon dust. Run the shower for 3 minutes before your first use. It clears quickly.

Water is leaking from the housing joint

The housing may not be fully tightened, or the rubber O-ring gasket inside is damaged. Check that the cartridge is fully seated and the housing is screwed on evenly. If the O-ring is damaged, contact AquaBliss – replacement gaskets are available.

Water pressure seems lower than before

If the new cartridge is installed correctly, pressure should be the same as before (or slightly better than an old, clogged cartridge). If pressure is still low, check that you installed the correct cartridge model for your filter housing.

When to Replace (and How to Track It)

AquaBliss recommends a 6-month replacement schedule (6-8 months for the SF220/SF500). The cartridge has no indicator – you replace on a schedule, not a signal. The easiest method: set a repeating calendar reminder for 6 months from your last replacement date.

Replace earlier if you notice: sulfur or chlorine odor returning, dry skin/hair coming back, or reduced water flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my AquaBliss cartridge?

Every 6 months for SF100, every 6-8 months for SF220/SF500. Set a calendar reminder – the cartridge has no indicator light.

Do I need tools?

Usually not. The housing unscrews by hand. If stuck, use a rubber strap wrench. Avoid metal pliers or pipe wrenches which can crack the plastic.

Why is my water gray after the replacement?

Fine carbon dust from the new cartridge. Run the shower for 2-3 minutes before your first use. It clears completely.

Is the SFC220 3-pack worth buying?

Yes, if you plan to keep your SF220 or SF500 long-term. The 3-pack covers 18+ months and saves about 15-20% per cartridge vs. buying individually.
